How to edit your business info and site design (Global Values and Theme)
What these two tabs are for
Global Values holds facts about your business that appear in more than one place on your site, plus site-wide wording. Theme holds your site's colors, light or dark mode and, on designs that offer them, the look, fonts and layout switches.
To change the words on one page, use the Content tab. See service pages and service-area pages.
Where to find them
- Log in to your site's WordPress admin.
- In the left menu, click Website Editor.
- Click Global Values or Theme.
Each tab has one Save button at the bottom that saves every field on the tab.
Global Values: business details
- Business name. Saving it also sets your WordPress Site Title to the same name.
- Business tagline. See tagline and favicon.
- Phone, Email, Address.
- Logo: click Choose from Media Library to pick or upload an image, or paste an address in Or paste an image URL. Remove clears it.
- Footer blurb: the short description in your footer.
- Industry term: the word for your trade.
- Business country: United States, Canada, United Kingdom or Australia.
- Site language: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Romanian or Turkish.
- Main city (overrides the address city everywhere one is shown): changes the city name visitors read. Map links and search-engine business data keep the city from your address.
- Main city, state override (e.g. "Irvine, CA").
- Header location label (e.g. "Serving Erie, PA") — shown in the top utility bar: shows only when the phone bar is turned on in Theme.
- WordPress site title (wp-admin Site Title / RSS feed title).
Global Values: opening hours
Weekday hours, Saturday hours and Sunday hours each have an Opens and a Closes box, in 24-hour form such as 09:00 and 17:00. Click Mark closed for a day you are closed, or Set hours to open it again. Your Contact page shows these as a Monday to Friday line, a Saturday line and a Sunday line. A closed day shows "Closed".
Global Values: search-engine business details
These fields go into the business information your site gives search engines. Visitors do not see them on the page.
- Business type (schema.org): LocalBusiness, HomeAndConstructionBusiness, GeneralContractor, RoofingContractor, Plumber, Electrician, HVACBusiness, MovingCompany, Locksmith, HousePainter, Dentist or AutoRepair.
- Price range (schema.org): $, $$, $$$ or $$$$.
- Latitude (schema.org) and Longitude (schema.org): used only when both are filled in with numbers.
- Schema description override (schema.org): blank uses your site description or tagline.
- Address country code (schema.org, e.g. US): blank uses US.
- Language/locale override for og:locale (e.g. "en_US"); blank keeps the automatic mapping.
Other fields in Global Values are covered on their own pages: contact form, call-to-action band, section headings and footer and social links.
Theme: what you can change
- Theme mode: Light or Dark.
- Look: shown on designs that offer it. Choose Classic or Bold. The Waterline design has no Look setting.
- Eleven colors: Heading, Body, Primary, Primary Hover, Secondary, Bg, Bg Alt, Body Alt, Border, Border Light, Border Alt. Click the swatch to pick a color, or type a hex code such as #1F3E90. A blank color stays automatic and follows your Primary color.
- Fonts, on designs that offer them: Heading font and Body font. Leave either on "— automatic —" to keep the design's font.
- Text Styles, on the same designs: a size box and a weight list for Eyebrow, H1, H2, H3 and Body. Weights run from 300 to 900. A blank size or "— automatic —" weight keeps the design's setting.
- Look switches: Hero layout (Full or Split), Phone bar at the top of every page, and Photo gallery section on the home page. Each switch appears only when your design supports it.
When you click Save, your site checks the colors. A color that is not a valid hex code, or that is too close to the background or text colors to read, stops the save and shows a message such as "That color is too close to the site's background or text colors to read clearly. Pick a different color."
Good to know
- A logo set in WordPress's own Appearance > Customize screen is copied into the Logo field when you publish there.
- To check a change, open your site in a new tab. A new phone number shows in the footer. A new color shows on buttons and headings.
