How to edit a page's SEO title and description
What this is
Each page on your site has an SEO title and an SEO description. Search engines can show them in results. The SEO title is also the text in the browser tab. Neither one appears in the body of the page.
Where to find it
- Log in to your site's WordPress admin.
- In the left menu, click Website Editor.
- Click Content.
- Choose the page in the Page list.
- Scroll past the page's content fields to the SEO heading.
- Change the fields, then click Save.
Fields
| Field | What it does | When left blank |
|---|---|---|
| SEO title | The page title for search results and the browser tab. Up to 70 characters. | Built from the page's name and your business name. On most pages this is the page title, a | sign, then your business name. |
| SEO description | The short summary for search results. Up to 200 characters. | The page's first intro paragraph, cut to about 160 characters. |
| Canonical URL | Tells search engines which address is the main one for this content. | The page's own address. |
| Hide from search engines | A switch. When on, the page asks search engines not to list it. | Off. |
| Social share image | The picture shown when someone shares the page. Use Choose image, Replace image or Remove. | The page's own main photo, or your home page photo. |
Under the SEO title and SEO description boxes, a counter shows how many characters you have used, such as 42 / 70. A title or description over the limit is refused when you save, and an error shows under the Save button.
Using the Agent tab instead
The Agent tab on your dashboard can also change these fields for you. See The Agent tab.
Good to know
- The large heading visitors see on the page is a different field: Page heading, in the same Content tab.
- Every page in the Page list has its own SEO fields, including service and service-area pages.
- To check the title, open the page in a new tab and read the browser tab. Search engines update their results on their own schedule.
